What are the Eligibility Criteria for the Korean Government Scholarship Program?

Graduate Program / Masters & PhD Degree Programs

  1. For the Master's Degree, the course is 3 years long in total. One year is spent in mastering the language of Korea, then two years of academic studies to finish your degree.
  2. For a Doctoral Degree, this is a 4-year course in total. Similar to the master's pathway, you'll start with a year of intense Korean language study. Then you'll have three years for your doctoral research and studies.
  3. This opportunity is available exclusively to citizens of certain countries which the National Institute for International Education Development chooses. Sorry, but as a Korean citizen or dual citizen of Korea, you are not eligible.
  4. The majority of applicants should be below 40 years as of September 1st of the program year. However, if you are a professor from an Official Development Assistance recipient country, the upper age limit is 45.
  5. You should have already obtained a bachelor or master degree by 31st July of the academic year for the program. You are not eligible to apply if you have already graduated from high school, undergraduate degree, or a graduate degree from Korea.
  6. During your previous degree course, you should have had a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 80% or above. This indicates that you have been a good student.

Undergraduate Program

  1. Bachelor's Degree this is a 5-7 year course in total. The first year is spent on intensive Korean language study. After that, you'll spend four to six years on your degree program, based on your major.
  2. Associate Degree This is a 3-4 year program in total. Similar to the bachelor's program, learning the Korean language is what the first year is devoted to. You will proceed with two to three years completing your degree.
  3. You will have to be a citizen of a country specified by the National Institute for International Education Development. Korean citizenship or dual Korean citizenship cannot apply.
  4. You should be below the age of 25 as of March 1st in the application year.
  5. You should have graduated from high school by December 31st of the application year. However, you are not eligible for this program if you have already graduated from a Korean high school such as international schools or a Korean university.
  6. You need to have a very good academic background. Your Cumulative Grade Point Average should be equal to or greater than 80% from your past studies.

Required Documents for Government of Korea Scholarship

  1. Personal Statement describing your motivations, educational history, and key experiences.
  2. Study Plan outlining your intended academic plan, your field of study of choice, and your aims for studying in Korea.
  3. Personal Medical Report to ensure you are in good physical and mental health.
  4. Signed GKS Applicant Agreement, whereby you consent to the terms and conditions of the scholarship.
  5. You'll need to furnish your recommender with details and get them to write and sign a letter of recommendation.
  6. Documentation of your citizenship and that of your parents.
  7. A duplicate of your high school or prior degree graduation certificate. In case you're a potential graduate, you will provide a certificate of anticipated graduation.
  8. An official transcript of your grades from your prior program of study.
  9. You can also include copies of awards, certificates of official language tests or other certificates to substantiate your application.

What is the selection Process?

  1. Applying for the Global Korea Scholarship is a multi-step process with varying routes based on whether you apply via an embassy or a university.
  2. You send all your application materials to the Korean Embassy in your native country. The embassy's selection panel will examine all the applications it receives and shortlist a reduced number of strong applicants to proceed.
  3. You can submit directly to a Korean university that participates in the GKS program. The university will then screen all the applications and select candidates to recommend to NIIED.
  4. Following the first round, the successful candidates from both the university track and embassy track are posted to the National Institute for International Education Development in Korea. A central selection committee at NIIED will then do a second, thorough screening of all the recommended applications to verify who is eligible for the scholarship.
  5. Final Step is Admission to the University.
  6. This stage is exclusive to those who have applied via the embassy.
  7. If you were successful at the NIIED review, your application will be forwarded to the three universities you indicated on your application form.
  8. The universities will consider your documents and determine whether to make you an offer of admission.
  9. In order to become a recipient of the international scholarship, you should be selected by one of these universities. If you fail to be offered a place by any of them, you will not be chosen as one of the final GKS scholars.

How to apply for Korean Government Scholarship?

  1. Before proceeding with anything else, download and read thoroughly the official GKS Application Guidelines for the year you are applying. These appear on the Study in Korea website each year and hold the most current and precise information regarding eligibility, deadlines, needed documents, and participating schools.
